When a house needs rewiring

The homes that most often need a rewire are the older weatherboard cottages around the Sale CBD and along the Raymond, York and Foster Street spine, many of which still have their original VIR wiring from the 1950s or earlier. Signs a house needs rewiring include two-pin outlets (no earth), fabric- or rubber-sheathed cable visible at the switchboard or in the roof, brittle or cracked cable insulation, frequent faults and tripping, lights that dim when appliances turn on, and any cable that is obviously old. The 1970s brick veneer homes in Guthridge and Sale North are usually on early PVC and may not need a full rewire, but they often need partial rewiring — a kitchen circuit, a bathroom circuit — when renovated.

How a rewire works

A full rewire replaces all the power and lighting cables in the home, brings in a modern switchboard with RCD protection, fits earthed three-pin power points, and brings the smoke alarms up to standard. It is a big job — we lift floorboards, access the roof space, and chase walls where needed — so it is usually done when a house is being renovated or between tenants. We plan it with you, quote up front, and keep the house safe and powered where we can during the work. A partial rewire targets the circuits that need it — often a kitchen or bathroom renovation, or replacing a known faulty run — and is less disruptive.
